The Technology Behind 3D

In order to view 3-D movies an illusion of depth needs to be created. An easy way to trick the brain into viewing depth is to provide the eye with two different versions of the same object. Each version will have a minor deviation similar to what both eyes see naturally in binocular vision.
Remember in the 1950s when 3-D movies were all the craze. I remember seeing those old black-and-white photos, with guys with short haircuts and women with bouffant hairdos, wearing green and red 3-D glasses watching a black-and-white screen. The 3-D technology used in these movies was anaglyph.
In 1853 Wilhelm Rollmann developed this technique. Using two color layers offset to create a 3D effect. By using two colored, glasses which are opposite in color, a stereoscopic 3-D effect can be created.
The modern IMAX movies of today use polarized passive technology. Polarized glasses create the illusion of 3-D images by restricting light that reaches each eye, which in turn creates a stereoscopic effect.
The latest and greatest in 3-D technology, is active technology. This technology displays one image to our left eye and one image to our right eye. This technology will half the frame rate. That is why this technology wasn't available until refresh rate speeds were increased. 3-D HD TVs need to have a minimum frame rate of 120 HZ, although most modern 3-D HD TVs have a refresh rate of 240 HZ or more.
In order for the new active technology to work you are must wear active liquid crystal shutter glasses. These glasses sequentially block the view of different eyes, so that the images will be viewed in 3-D. These glasses are battery-operated and contain, liquid crystals that can be made opaque, to block each eyes view of certain images.
Even though 3-D technology is not new the new advances of active technology for home 3-D viewing are. Electronics manufacturers aren't stopping with this technology, work is currently being done on home 3-D TVs that do not require classes. Although this technology has not been perfected to enjoy different viewing angles and to be cost effective.
You can currently view 3-D movies On Blu-Ray discs using a HDMI 4.1 cable. Because of the recent advances in technology and the current advances in home 3-D TV many cable providers are coming up with their own 3-D channels. DirecTV has plans for a 3-D pay-per-view channel and more. ESPN is hoping to get 3-D sports sent out to viewers.
Sony is optimistic about the future of 3-D gaming in fact the PlayStation three will soon have a firm upgrade available that will upgrade the player with 3-D capabilities. These include the ability to play new 3-D games and view 3-D Blu-Ray disc using your PlayStation three.
The Discovery Channel also has several 3-D viewing options in the works. Anyone who has ever seen a 3-D IMAX movie knows the potential of the Discovery Channel in 3-D. This technology has come along way since the 1950s and with the rapid development currently taking place the possibilities are endless.
